The battalions are expected to be in place by the end of the weekend, and will be capable of supporting the evacuation of several thousand people a day, both U.S. citizens and Afghan nationals. MIlitants captured two of the country’s largest cities in recent days, and a Pentagon spokesman said they appear to be trying to isolate Kabul before moving on the city. The city was once the Taliban's stronghold, and is strategically important as a leading trade hub. "Following heavy clashes late last night the Taliban took control of Kandahar city," a local government official told Reuters news agency.
